| Federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount | Yes, off the battery price | Clean Energy Regulator |
| Solar Victoria battery loan | No, closed to new applications | Solar Victoria |
| Solar Victoria solar panel rebate | Yes, up to $1,400, if eligible | Solar Victoria |

1. The federal discount is what you get
The battery discount in Victoria is the same as everywhere else in Australia. Batteries installed by 31 December 2026 earn 6.8 certificates per usable kWh on the first 14 kWh, 60 % of that from 14 to 28 kWh, and 15 % from 28 to 50 kWh (Clean Energy Regulator, Solar batteries, last updated 31 July 2026). At about $38 a certificate:
| Usable capacity | Installed by 31 Dec 2026 | Installed Jan to Jun 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | about $2,584 | about $2,166 |
| 13.5 kWh | about $3,458 | about $2,888 |
| 20 kWh | about $4,522 | about $3,800 |
The factor drops to 5.7 on 1 January 2027, and the installation date is what counts (what the cut costs you).
2. The Solar Victoria battery loan has closed
Solar Victoria used to offer an interest-free loan towards a home battery. Its page now says it is no longer taking applications for interest-free loans for the installation of a solar battery system (Solar Victoria, solar battery loan, updated 16 April 2026, read 29 October 2026). Households who already have one keep repaying it, up to $183.34 a month over four years. The same page points to the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which opened on 1 July 2025.
If a salesperson mentions a "Victorian battery rebate" in 2026, ask which scheme they mean. For the battery itself, it should be the federal discount, shown on the quote as a number of certificates.
3. Adding solar panels? A Victorian rebate may still apply
Solar Victoria still offers a rebate of up to $1,400 towards solar panels, with an optional interest-free loan of up to $1,400 (Solar Victoria, solar panel rebate, updated 21 October 2026). The main conditions listed:
- you are the owner-occupier of an existing home;
- the combined household taxable income of all owners is under $150,000 a year;
- the property is valued under $3 million;
- the address has not already received a solar panel or solar battery rebate under the program.
Rebates are released each month in limited numbers, so check availability before you sign. This rebate is for the panels, not the battery. If you are installing both, it can lower the total, but the battery part still relies on the federal discount.
4. Victorian Energy Upgrades does not cover batteries
The Victorian Energy Upgrades program gives discounts on heating and cooling, hot water and efficient appliances. Its homes page (last updated 15 October 2026) does not list batteries.
Before you get quotes in Victoria
- Check the quote shows the number of certificates, the price per certificate and the price after the discount.
- Ask for a written installation date if you want the 2026 factor.
- The battery must be on the approved list, able to join a virtual power plant, and installed by an accredited installer with a battery endorsement.
